Q. Hello, I am a newcomer to satellite radio and I recently purchased the new
Sirius Sportster 5. I seem to have followed all the instructions while
installing it, yet I noticed especially on talkshow channels or when mellow
songs are playing, that there is significant static. Is there any suggestions
on how to get rid of this ??

A. Unfortunately the built-in FM transmitters in all newer satellite radios are pretty weak–so when you are setting your Sirius Radio to a certain frequency, setting your car stereo accordingly, and broadcasting over FM, these types of problems often arise. However, there are a few ways you can eliminate this problem.

The cheapest and easiest way to correct this would be to use an 1/8″ to 1/8″ mini auxiliary cable from your satellite radio car dock to an auxiliary input that is sometimes located on the front of newer car stereos (usually marketed for use with iPods). If your car does not have that port available, but it does have a cassette tape player, you could use a regular cassette tape adapter–which you would also plug into the audio/line out on the car dock. Both of these options would give you a direct connection through your car stereo.
If neither of these things are available to you, the next option would be an auxiliary input adapter or a FM direct adapter. Both of these parts also give you a direct connection through your car stereo, but are internally installed and vehicle specific.

Any of these options will eliminate the static and interference and help you fully enjoy your satellite radio.

Q. I am sure this has been asked, but I cannot find a post. Please tell me the difference between the Stiletto 2 and Stiletto 100. All I can seem to find is the size. That does not justify the price difference so I know I missing something.

A. The major differences between the Stiletto 2 and the Stiletto 100 are as follows:

-The Stiletto 2 has a slot for a MicroSD flash memory card which allows you to store up to 8GB of mp3s without diminishing the 100 hours (2GB) of built in time/memory for recording Sirius programming.

-The Stiletto 100 is not MicroSD capable, meaning there is no expandable memory. Any mp3 file you add to the Stiletto 100 diminishes the amount of time you have for recording Sirius programming.

-The Stiletto 2 can connect to both the B or G wi-fi network, where as the Stiletto 100 can only connect to the B network. The B network is an older wi-fi system and is often not available in as many locations as the G network, if available at all.

-The Stiletto 2 came out in the fall of 2007 so all of the accessories are still manufactured and are (usually) readily available.

-The Stiletto 100 is discontinued and many of it’s accessories are discontinued and no longer available (such as the Home Kit, Extended Battery, etc.)

Deciding between the Stiletto 2 and the Stiletto 100 is really determined by how you intend on using the device.

Q. I have a Stiletto 2 radio and I’ve been trying to update all of my mp3 files (that I have stored on a Mirco sd card). Everytime I go through and try to change the titles and band names it still reverts back to the previous info. Is it possible to rename files and update information without removing the songs and loading them back on?

A. Yes, you can update the information without having to reload all of the songs. Here’s what you need to do: First, take the MicroSD card out of the Stiletto 2 and restart the device. Next, shut the Stiletto 2 down (power all the way down, not just sleep mode). Then put the MicroSD card back in and restart the Stiletto again. This will reset the database files (and may take a few minutes) and update the Artist/Song info.

Q. I am a long-time Sirius subscriber. I utilize the Sportster portable capability to use in my personal vehicle, home, and RV. My old Sportster recently died. I purchased the Streamer receiver and am very upset with the lack of power output. My question is about the performance in my RV. In the RV, we have a dash radio and an outside entertainment center. Traditionally, the older receiver broadcasted a clear signal to the outside radio. The new one completely fails. Any idea on how I can get a single receiver to provide enough power to broadcast on both of my RV radios?

A. I would suggest using the Whole House FM Transmitter. The Whole House FM Transmitter allows you to connect your portable Sirius Radio unit (i.e. Sportster, Starmate, etc.) to an external FM transmitter that is stronger–thus allowing you to tune into Sirius with multiple FM radios in your home or vehicle with better results.

A. There really isn’t any way to determine if this problem is in the Sirius Antenna or the dock, unless you have spare parts to test them against. You have diagnosed it about as well as you can, as the problem could be either the antenna or the dock.

A. Unfortunately, the Starmate 3 is a completely different set up than the Sportster 2. The Starmate 3 is a 5 Volt radio, where as the Sportster 2 is a 12 Volt–so the power is not compatible. Obviously the docking station is different too. However, you can use the same Sirius Antenna.

the screen works but it will not pick up a signal. How difficult is it to
switch screens to make the working one with the broke screen to work.

A. As far as I know doing any kind of repair usually does not end with good results. There aren’t even professional repair shops for Sirius Radio products, so I’m not sure how much luck you would have trying yourself.

The only thing I can suggest is trying to do a software update or hard reset on the Stiletto 100 that won’t pick up a signal. Either of those procedures often clear up those types of problems.
